Meals on Wheels (MOW)

Meals on Wheels (MOW)

Community Emergency Service Meals On Wheels (MOW) is an important solution to those in need of nutritional and social support, many of whom are homebound. We serve over 360 people daily in the inner city areas of South and North Minneapolis with a smile and a prepared, nutritious, hot noon meal or frozen meals delivered weekly to our most active clients.

Our MOW meal delivery program:

  • Operates Monday through Friday
  • To homebound seniors and, in some cases, physically disabled non-seniors
  • Delivered by volunteers, many directly to the clients’ door
  • Offers a well check and daily contact to many who are isolated
  • Individuals call and schedule times directly with MOW
  • Builds community and a sense of connection

sm 2d MOWWe have over 500 dedicated individuals, most from downtown corporations and congregations, who make this service to homebound seniors possible. We welcome anyone who is interested in helping to serve the community in this way.

MOW Story: Ester as told by a volunteer driver

Ester lives in a high-rise apartment building in a nearby neighborhood. As with some elderly, she was not eating very well. Because Ester’s adult daughter lives too far away to visit regularly, the daughter was concerned about Ester’s nutrition and health. So about a year ago, the adult daughter called CES and asked if we could start delivering Meals on Wheels (MOW) to her mother.

CES MOW started serving Ester a meal very day and I was lucky enough to bring her lunch on a regular basis for a while. Why was I lucky and what makes Ester amazing (I hear you ask)? She is in her late seventies and has the most grateful attitude I have ever seen. When I delivered her MOW meal for the first time, she was surprised to get the meal, and so grateful! She expressed thanks to me, the organization and her daughter for contacting us. When I told her we would deliver every day, she was over the moon.

Ester not only shows her gratitude, she oozes joy. As I head to the next delivery, Ester has broadened my smile and I try to pass it on. Sometimes, I even whistle the polka that she plays at a deafening level all day long. After eating a meal, she often calls to tell us how enjoyable it was. You have to have some gratitude to share it. Those of us who deliver meals often follow Ester’s example and deliver some joy and gratitude, too.

This service is funded in part through a contract with the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging (MAAA) as part of the Older American's Act.
