Meals on Wheels (MOW)

Meals on Wheels (MOW)

Community Emergency Service Meals On Wheels (MOW) is an important solution to both short term emergency and long term living situations and hunger facing many people in the community. It is designed to deliver a prepared, nutritious, hot noon meal—Monday through Friday—to homebound seniors and, in some cases, physically disabled non-seniors who are unable to manage their own meal preparation.

In the last year, our Meals On Wheels program began serving homebound seniors a hot or frozen meal in the Loring Nicollet and North Minneapolis areas in addition to the Phillips neighborhood. We serve 325 people daily, which makes us the largest MOW program in Minneapolis.

Our meals are delivered mostly by volunteers.  We have over 500 dedicated individuals, most from downtown corporations and congregations, who make this service to homebound seniors possible. They deliver a hot nutritious meal and a warm and friendly face!

sm DSC 0060CES Choice Meals, a weekly frozen meal plan, offers more scheduling flexibility to our most active Meals on Wheels clients. Referrals also are made to other food shelves and CES's own Home Delivery, a new program that serves low income MOW's people who can't get out "to shop" for themselves.

Volunteers are the Backbone:

Volunteers deliver most of the meals right to clients' doors. Daily contact is important to those with little connection to the world outside their home. Committed to delivering more than a meal, we hope, in a small way, to build a sense of connection and community. Volunteers also benefit from serving the community through this program. Once a week, or once a month; alone, with a friend, or work associates; this activity feeds the body and soul.

Many volunteers are needed to ensure that every senior on every route receives their meals.

  • volunteers are needed from both businesses and individuals
  • meals are delivered Monday through Friday at the noontime hour
  • many of our volunteers come through their companies which are committed to serving certain days
  • individuals call and schedule times directly with MOW

MOW Enters the Job Market

sm bob neppleBob Nepple, CES staff, has delivered Meals On Wheels meals for close to 15 years, serving countless clients, some of whom have become friends.

Recently, Bob shared about Edna who had lived on her own for many years. As is the case with many elderly, health issues signal changes for the family. Edna began to have problems cooking, resulting in lack of nutrition, weakness and other health complications.

Out of love for his mother, Darrel, Edna’s son, quit his job and moved home to take care of her. It was an extreme sacrifice, but one that he did willingly.

Looking for ways to help his mother, Darrel found CES Meals on Wheels, which delivered her hot, nutritious meals each day. Little by little, Edna regained her strength. Darrel recently talked to Bob and stated, “We are extremely grateful for your program and what you have done for my mom! She is doing so well that I can now look for a job. Thank you!”

As Edna receives her meals each day, she is smiling, excited and thankful for the variety of food. Not only is she getting the nutrition she needs, but “she has people to check on her” while Darrel is working.
